A woman experiencing hypoactive sexual desire disorder, also known as
HSDD or low sex drive, should speak to a doctor about the problem
without delay. A doctor may prescribe medical methods to increase
hormonal levels or recommend a health and exercise regimen to improve
overall health and thus also boost sexual desire too. Some medications
for disorders such as high blood pressure, depression and respiratory
congestion may cause sexual difficulties. Keep the doctor informed about
any new sexual problems so that he or she may work to find
prescriptions that will not impact your sexuality.
Regular exercise increases overall health and also gives the
libido a boost. Exercise helps clear the mind of stress and allows the
body to release toxins. Exercise also helps enable deep sleep. Ongoing
exercise helps the body feel great, boosts self-esteem and gives a spike
in sexual desire.
Therapy may greatly increase sexual desire in women. Therapy
will help women ease the mind of troubles and encourage the spirit to
feel better and desire sexuality. Therapy in areas such as relationship
issues, sexual issues, post-traumatic stress disorder, issues of past
sexual abuse or rape and therapy for depression may help to boost sexual
desire. Therapy will help the mind to ease worries and focus instead on
issues that bring pleasure, such as sexuality.
Some food products, like dark chocolate (which contains
phenylalanine) and products containing zinc--like pumpkin seeds, oysters
and spinach--are believed to help increase sexual desire. Ginseng also
may possibly help increase the libido.
As menopause begins, the ebb and flow of hormones in a
woman's body may diminish the sex drive. Thus, hormone therapy is
sometimes administered to help boost a flagging sex drive. It may also
ease discomforting symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, lack of
sleep and loss of libido that may impact a woman's sexuality. While some
people have fears about hormone therapy, the National Institute of
Health states that "Women who begin hormone therapy within ten years of
menopause may have less risk of coronary heart disease due to hormone
therapy than woman farther from menopause."
Using a vaginal lubricant such as K-Y Jelly or Astroglide
may help a woman enjoy sex more fully. Some women experience vaginal
dryness as menopause begins. A vaginal lubricant may help ease that
symptom and bring the joy back to sex. Once a woman knows sex will not
be painful due to dryness, the sexual drive may return to normal or even
increase.
Work at building self-esteem by pursing goals and working
each day to achieve your dreams for life. Focus on the important areas
of life such as relationships, career, health and spirituality to keep
the self-esteem strong and ever growing. A strong sense of self esteem
will work to boost sexual desire in a woman.
